Johannesburg

After 22 hours of travelling we arrived in Johannesburg. Getting through customs and immigration was no problem and both parts of the keyboard seem to have got here undamaged. We were picked up by the minivan from the guest house which is only 5 minutes from the airport. Then it was straight into a 5 hour tour of Soweto. Our Tour guide Charles was very entertaining, and seemd to know someone at every intyersection we stoppped at. It seems like very few of the traffic lights actually worked and those that did seemed irrelevant to most drivers. I dont think Johannesburg is the place to learn to drive.

We stopped at the Catholic church in Soweto where the police raided a student meeting in 1976 and the bullet holes in the ceilings and parts of the stained glass are kept as a reminder of the event. Then it was onto the street where both Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. The Mandela house is now a small museum which is filled with information and pictures of Mandela. Then we went for a short walk to the museum that commemorates the young students who were killed during the 1976 uprising, when the students protested aginst having to  in Africaans.

We met up with John and Susan and Peter and Luanne tonight. Battery is going flat. Will continue tomorrow. Phil
